In April 2023, thanks to funding provided by ArtsNL and support from the Town of Pouch Cove, the Pouch Cove Public Art Committee launched its third public art project, this time for a temporary outdoor sculpture to be installed in Kirby’s Garden, a public gathering area across from the Pouch Cove Town Hall. The concept behind the Plinth Project is to replace artwork every twelve months, providing a platform for diverse artistic expressions. The PAPAC remains committed to enhancing the cultural environment of Pouch Cove, connecting residents, and inviting visitors to the area through our existing and future public art projects. There was a call for expression of interest from which Connor MacKinnon, Josh Whalen, and Roberto Santaguida were shortlisted. The committee then chose MacKinnon’s proposal, Adopt a Hydrant. The artwork was installed in October 2023. The installation coincided with Fire Prevention Week, adding a unique dimension to the artwork. The active participation of the Pouch Cove Volunteer Fire Department highlighted a remarkable sense of community engagement. At the art launch event on October 14, 2023, Deputy Mayor Kara Connors of the Town of Pouch Cove stated that, “…. we are impressed with the process…they have the site and that determines the kind of artwork that goes in.” This statement illustrates the interconnection between art, place, and the community it serves, which is essential for the success of public art projects.
