Pouch Cove Public Art Project
Call to Artists – Expression of Interest Public Art: Kirby’s Garden, Pouch Cove, NL Submission Deadline: March 28, 2024
Project Description The Pouch Cove Public Art Committee invites Canadian professional artists to submit an “Expression of Interest” for a temporary outdoor three-dimensional public artwork to be featured in the centre of the community of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. The selected artwork will be displayed for 12 months with ownership rights remaining with the artist. Artists may indicate if the submission is for existing work (completed within the last five years) or proposed new work. The site for the artwork is the northeast part of Kirby’s Garden, a public gathering area across from the Pouch Cove Town Hall that is frequented by both residents and visitors. The artwork will be installed on an existing oval-shaped concrete base measuring 48” x 96” and will replace the sculpture that was installed in 2023.
The proposed artwork should respond to the considerations listed below: size and scale of the site, general uses of the site, safety of the public, and durability of the materials
Budget The total budget for this project is a maximum of $10,000, covering all costs associated with the artwork: artist fees, materials, fabrication, transportation, insurance, installation, removal, and all other project- related costs. Assistance will be available to help the artist install the work. The commissioned artist(s) will be expected to install the artwork by October 31, 2024. Artist selection will follow a two-stage process. Stage 1: Expression of Interest – due March 28, 2024 Submit the following information as one PDF file: 1. Artist contact information 2. Current Curriculum Vitae 3. A preliminary concept drawing (hand-sketched or digital) of the proposed work 4. Maximum of 10 images of past work with descriptions Please note: a detailed proposal is not required at this time. The Committee will review all initial submissions and select a shortlist of up to 3 artists to proceed to the second stage. Stage 2: Request for Proposals The shortlisted artists will receive notification on or before April 14 and an invitation to submit a detailed proposal and an accompanying maquette. They will also provide an online presentation during a public event. Shortlisted artists will receive an honorarium of $500 for their submissions.
