Pouch Cove Public Art Project
The Pouch Cove Public Art Committee (PCPAC) was established in 2020 with a mandate to create opportunities for artists to work in the public realm and to foster greater awareness, curiosity, and appreciation of contemporary art within our community. Since then, PCPAC has successfully raised $75,500 through grants and private funds, resulting in the commissioning of four distinctive public art projects, ranging from small sculptures to large-scale interactive installations. These projects have significantly enriched the cultural landscape of Pouch Cove while providing direct economic and professional support to artists. To date, 92% of project funding has gone directly to artists, demonstrating our strong commitment to supporting the artistic community at the core of our mandate. PCPAC’s commissioning approach emphasizes openness and public participation. Through a two-stage selection process, artists submit maquettes for public display, giving residents the opportunity to engage with diverse artistic visions before a final commission is made. In addition, PCPAC has organized 15 public events, including artist talks, workshops, and special celebrations. These public events have created spaces for conversation, fostering a culture of learning between artists and the public. In July 2025, PCPAC celebrated a key milestone with the re-installation of the artwork “Adopt a Hydrant” in Portugal Cove St. Philip’s, marking the first rotation initiative of ‘The Plinth Project’. Through this partnership and collaboration, PCPAC has expanded the reach of our programs and laid the foundation for future opportunities for public art engagement in other communities. As we look forward, PCPAC remains committed to commissioning new works and expanding community partnerships and providing opportunities for artists and audiences. Our goal is to continue to build a collection of public artworks, creating opportunities for rotation, collaboration, and long-term public access to contemporary art across as many communities as we can reach, ensuring that art remains an integral part of community life.
